When I started releasing music as Dave Machine, I built myself in a box and got stuck thinking that I could only release house music, but this wasn't representative of what I was actually making. I love mucking around with sounds and following where my obsessions take me. I was making music from loads of genres like experimental hip hop and really calm modular ambient stuff. I wanted to make Scatter Brain as a way to challenge myself to bring all of these genres into a cohesive sound, to stretch the music that I put out.

I was inspired by artists who create their own diverse musical worlds like Gorillaz, Flying Lotus and The Avalanches.

At the time of making the EP I was also listening to Al Green, James Brown, Madlib, MNDSGN, Washed Out, Stereolab, Bjork, Four Tet, Caribou and Bicep. I think a little bit of each of these artists has seeped into each song.
